The Opportunity:Tate & Lyle is seeking a subject matter expert in biotransformations and/or large-scale separation science and physical processing for the Sweeteners new product development team within Tate & Lyle's Innovation and Commercial Development function.The Role:Upon joining the team, you will immediately become part of a dynamic and changing, cross-functional team, interacting with experts in the area of sweeteners, process engineering, sensory testing, nutrition, product registration, global regulatory compliance, procurement, and manufacturing. Jointly you will work together to develop and introduce new sweetener technology offerings to the food and beverage marketplace. You will be a synergistic collaborator on all projects in which you are involved. You will also be the technical lead on some projects, where you will be leading the project coordination or formally functioning as project manager. You will be a key part of our evolving workplace and progress us in our efforts for continuous improvement and innovation.The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining a safety mindset
  • Identifying opportunities, followed by chemistry ideation and hands-on development in close collaboration with application research
  • Assessing initial technical and economic feasibility
  • Designing approaches for commercial sale up in cooperation with process engineers
  • Developing and maintain knowledge of cutting edge/new technologies and competitor activity
  • Creating and documenting intellectual property in invention disclosures, patent applications and technical reports
  • Operating as a strong team player, both as a team member and as a team/project leader across multiple projects
  • Leveraging your technical skills with your colleagues and growing our capabilities as a team through learning from others and training othersBasic Qualifications
    • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Organic/Natural Products Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and related hands-on experience, or an M.S. in Chemistry or related filed with minimum of six years industrial focus on biotransformations and/or separations unit operations development, or a B.S. in Chemistry or related filed with minimum of nine years industrial focus on biotransformations and/or separations unit operations development.
    • Strong track record of technical, behavioral, and thought leadership
    • Technical expertise in one or more of the areas of enzymatic biotransformation, separation science/separations operations, physical processing, natural product isolation
    • Hand- on experience in use of enzymes for chemical transformations or large-scale chemical separations and physical processing
    • Ability to develop and champion independent ideas
    • Record of publications and/or patents
    • Personal alignment with Tate and Lyle's Core Values (safety, integrity, respect) and Leadership behaviors (Partnership, Agility, execution)Preferred qualifications
      • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Organic/Natural Products Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
      • Graduate level focus on biotransformations and/or separations unit operations development
      • Significant accomplishments from industrial experience in applying concepts of enzymatic biotransformations or large-scale separations science on complex compositions
      • Experience in the development of food related ingredients or relevant materials
      • Experience in scale-up from the benchtop to commercial scale
        • Experience in developing industrial and academic partners
